The sanctuary’s history started when the leaders of Maryknoll Sisters in the Philippines decided to give its resources to the government of Baguio City, since some of the resources of this religious institution were devastated by a strong earthquake that hitted the city in July 1990. Hence, the city government used the resources to make an ecological sanctuary, thus, Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary was developed in 1991.

This sanctuary features 14 stations that represent the majestic development of the cosmos. Station one symbolizes the creation of the universe while stations five and eight describe the creation of primates and mammals in the Earth. Lastly, station 13 and 14 describe the religious tradition in the world.

Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary has a trek known as Cosmic Journey. This trek enables its visitors to reflect on the interconnectedness of elements in the universe. Hence, it teaches people how to use the natural resources in the Earth wisely.
