PMA Homecoming

Baguio is not only home to the best climate in the Philippines but also for the strawberries, fresh yet cheap vegetables, colorful flora, quality silver, cultural heritage, and the best places to visit. Unknown to many, the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) is not only a training ground for the elite Philippine military but also a great place to see once in Baguio City. The PMA Homecoming ceremony is one reason to visit the PMA’s Fort Del Pilar.

Philippine Military Academy is located in Fort Del Pilar Loakan, Baguio City. It is about ten kilometers away from the town proper. Fort Del Pilar is open to the public everyday so attending activities like the PMA Homecoming is possible. One can easily go to Fort del Pilar by jeepney. Jeepneys to Loakan are stationed near Session Road and pass by Loakan Airport going straight PMA. The jeepney ride takes only about ten to fifteen minutes from the town proper.

Another way to get to Fort Del Pilar is to hire a taxi. Taxis are numerous and easy to find anywhere in Baguio City. Since Baguio City is quite small, all drivers know the best routes to take.

The Philippine Military Academy considers its PMA Homecoming Ceremonies as one of its biggest events every year. It is also considered as one of Baguio City’s institutional annual events so even the local government takes a part in it. The PMA cadets and officers are all ready for the grand celebration and programs.

The PMA Homecoming is usually held in the fort’s Grand Stand that may cater to thousands of participants, guests and visitors. This much-awaited grand celebration is held February of every year. PMA Homecoming is marked by continuous celebrations like balls, exhibitions, parades, drills, and other programs.

The reason to see the Philippine Military Academy is not only the grounds but also the slice of history it offers. The PMA first began as Academia Militar in October 25, 1898 in Malolos, Bulacan. In 1905, it was then transferred to The Walled City of Intramuros (Manila) then to Baguio City three years later. It first found its home on Camp Henry T. Allen then at Teacher’s Camp before its current location in Fort Del Pilar.

In 1936, it was officially named Philippine Military Academy and was authorized by Philippine Law to offer complete four-year courses for their cadets. This rich and long history accounts for the grand and famous celebration of the PMA Homecoming. For the same reason, big names in the Philippine politics like the President or Senators attend this event.

Baguio City then offers not only the usual parks but also the PMA’s Fort Del Pilar as an attraction. Events like the PMA Homecoming and a rich history of the Philippine military are the reasons why it is worth visiting.
